What’s Black on TV this Spring?
For months, I've been biding my time waiting for my shows and my stories to return to prime time because there is only so much of the Voice and Nicole Kidman that I can take. I'm proud to share what Blackness is on the tube this Spring so that we can all watch and discuss. … Continue reading What’s Black on TV this Spring?
Why #Star isn’t all that brilliant…
Each time I've tuned into the first three episodes of Fox's Star, I've been convinced that I'm watching Lee Daniels' fantasy Barbie doll playtime depicted in nighttime soap opera form. Only in Lee Daniels' mind would some cute little blonde slutty heroine named Star Davis (Jude Demorest), with a modernized tragic mulatta for a sister (Savannah … Continue reading Why #Star isn’t all that brilliant…
How #ChewingGum has me messed up….in a good way…
Although I watched Netflix's Chewing Gum early last month, I had to think critically about how I wanted to approach this write-up. There's a lot to unpack about this show; a lot of food for thought. However, I had no idea that Insecure would … Continue reading Why Watching #Insecure is Necessary as F***…

Still, the general idea is fitting for this blog because to see anything that Ava DuVernay has produced is to recognize that this … Continue reading Why you need to view #QueenSugar and #13thfilm as companion pieces right along with the rest of Ava DuVernay’s work…
Why watching Netflix’s Luke Cage is a must though the action kind of sucks…
It’s been two weeks since Netflix released Marvel’s Luke Cage. Rather than binge-watching over the premier weekend, I took my time ingesting the drama of the Harlem vigilante hero. Though I’m not a comic book fan in any real sense of the word, I did get to know the original character and I’m not quite sure how I … Continue reading Why watching Netflix’s Luke Cage is a must though the action kind of sucks…
In Light of All this Prime Time Blackness…
Have ya’ll noticed how there are a bunch of Black people on television these days?
We’re not talking about the evening news or guests on Maury. We’re talking about actual actors and actresses of color with leading roles and lines devoid of stereotypical jive talk. We’re talking Black television stars who aren’t just making cameo appearances as gangsters and/or prostitutes only to be shot down or carted off to prison within the first five minutes of the show. We're talking real characters with actual stakes in the plot and story line.
